Regaining Peace in Mind and Body

BY ARUNA L., TORONTO

About 28 years ago, my home country of Sri Lanka was in the throes of a civil war. My family and I left for Canada to begin a new life as immigrants. Over the years. living so far from my homeland and extended family caused me great loneliness. A deep sense of uncertainty and constant anxiety over the future kept me up at night. I relied on medication so I could have a restful sleep, work the following day, and support my loved ones.

Unfortunately, the long hours I spent behind the wheel as a driver hurt my spine. I could not even lift 200 grams, nor could I walk for more than six minutes at a go. My legs and back experienced such unbearable pain that my doctor advised me to stop work. Being physically unwell and unable to work depressed me.

Subsequently, with the help of the community assistance center, I joined Bodhi Meditation. After trying Energy Bagua, my body was filled with a great feeling of rejuvenation. Excited. I did not hesitate to sign up for classes.

Releasing My Emotions

On December 10, 2016, I attended the 8.5-Day Health & Happiness Retreat. The warm and enthusiastic reception I received from the volunteers made me feel welcome and relaxed. Gradually, I opened up my heart and shared my emotions and the great unhappiness that I had suppressed over the years. With the continual care and encouragement of my fellow practitioners, comfort and relief replaced the loneliness and despair I’d long struggled with.

Upon completion of the retreat, I continued to meditate every day. In the short span of two months, my sleep quality improved despite reducing my usual dosage of medication by half. (Editor’s note: Bodhi Meditation does not advocate reduction or discontinuation of medication and treatment without seeking a doctor’s advice.) To my joy, I can now carry my granddaughter in my arms. The pain in my back and legs has alleviated, and I can easily complete two hours of Energy Bagua practice and still have energy to burn. In January 2017, my doctor saw the tremendous transformation in me and encouraged me to continue with my practice. He was shocked that such positive, life-altering change could come through regular meditation practice.

I feel very lucky that at the age of 60, I regained peace in mind and body through a joyous way of life called Bodhi Meditation.
